Panasonic mulls shrinking HQ workforce: source

TOKYO (Reuters) - Panasonic Corp, which posted a record net loss in the business year just ended, is mulling fresh job losses on top of 17,000 recent lay-offs as the Japanese electronics conglomerate looks to engineer a profit rebound, a source said.

Following restructuring at its plants and other facilities, next in line is the company's headquarters, the source with knowledge of the deliberations said. Rather than redundancies, however, staff may be shifted to other units, subsidiaries or affiliates, the source added.

The maker of Viera TVs and Lumix cameras, which incurred a 772 billion yen ($9.7 billion) group net loss for the year ended March 31, may more than halve its 7,000 head office workers, the Nikkei business daily reported Tuesday, without saying where it obtained the information.

A Panasonic spokeswoman said no job cuts had been decided, adding that the company was, nonetheless, always looking for ways to restructure its business.

The consumer electronics maker's most recent round of staff cuts taps into an emerging trend of redundancies at yen-hobbled Japanese manufacturers, particularly technology giants such as Sony Corp that are struggling to compete against foreign rivals, such as Korea's Samsung Electronics.

Sony's new chief Kazuo Hirai last month outlined plans to cut 10,000 jobs, or 6 percent of the global workforce at the firm, as losses mount in its TV division.

Yet, borne of a stakeholder business culture where firing workers is frowned upon, Japanese firms still eschew mass lay-offs. That hesitancy leaves them worker heavy and, therefore, less productive.

Panasonic, with annual sales of about $99 billion, employs some 350,000 people worldwide. Sony has half that number on its payroll. Panasonic's payroll total is around three times that of Samsung Electronics and 60,000 more than General Electric, where annual sales are $30 billion higher.

Incoming president Kazuhiro Tsuga, due to take his post next month, has said one of his main missions would be to speed up decision-making. He has pledged to get Panasonic's ailing TV business back on a firm footing within two years.

Sources told Reuters earlier this month that Sony and Panasonic were in talks to jointly develop the technology to mass produce next-generation OLED televisions, widely seen replacing current LCD TVs.

Panasonic, which aims to achieve a 50 billion yen group net profit in the year ending March 2013, would start discussing the latest job cuts with workers in July and likely start offering early retirement soon after, the Nikkei said.

The company was also considering spinning off R&D and production technology functions, the paper said. Procurement division personnel could be transferred to closely affiliated segments.

Panasonic's shares gained as much as 3.3 percent in early trading in Tokyo and ended the morning session up 1.2 percent at 522 yen compared with a 0.3 percent fall in the broader Topix index. ($1 = 79.4850 Japanese yen)

iPad game lets kids virtually pulverize food to learn about nutrition

An award-winning mobile game called Smash Your Food is making strides among kids by allowing them to virtually smash junk food into oblivion, aiming for both fun and gross-out appeal, all while learning about nutrition.

Created by Washington-based nutritionist Marta De Wulf, the game was released in late March as an iPad app and is a winner in US First Lady Michelle Obama's "Apps for Health Kids" Competition, part of her Let's Move! initiative. The app is available in free and paid versions and for the web, and versions for iPhone and iPod Touch are coming this summer.

The idea of the game is to let kids guess the amount of sugar, salt, and oil in their favorite foods -- such as burgers, fries, and sodas -- then smash them to learn the totals. As players advance in the game, they'll have a chance to guess what is in more complex foods, and eventually entire meals.

"It's kind of playful and it's fun, and it doesn't hit you over the head," Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D., director of the University of Washington Center for Obesity Research, told The Seattle Times this week. "It helps families make small, incremental changes so that they eat a little bit better."

The free version includes five foods; the $2.99 version includes 40 foods and meals. "So far, more than 140,000 foods have been smashed around the world," according to The Seattle Times.

Meanwhile, another app game recently launched that hopes to inspire overweight teens to get active. Dubbed Zamzee, the game comes equipped with a hip-worn sensor that tracks kids' movements and awards physical activity with points that they can upload to the Zamzee web portal.

Social media reactions to Yahoo! Axis: impressive on the iPad, risky on the desktop

The reaction to Yahoo!’s brand new visually enhanced browser, Axis, has polarized social media users. Many are impressed by the company’s iOS app while others urge users to be wary of the desktop plug-in.

On Twitter technology blogs are posting links to their reviews and Tweeps are using their 140 characters to weigh in on the new browser.

“Yahoo Axis Shines on iPad, an Afterthought on Desktop” says Mashable. CNET editor Rafe Needlemann says he is surprisingly impressed. He tweets, “Here comes Yahoo’s own Web browser, Axis. Surprising factoid: It’s good. cnet.co/JJ92f9.”

All Things D Co-Executive editor Kara Swisher links to her Axis article, tweeting, “Good Lord, I Might Now Want to Use Yahoo Search Again -- Product Dudes Talk About New Axis Browser (Video) http://t.co/Il8E4Fiz.”

Senior MacWorld contributor Glenn Fleishman jokes that “Yahoo couldn’t afford to get [the guy in the Axis Demo video] a shave, a haircut, or a T-shirt that fit him. Hard times. Hard Axis times,” while other microbloggers liken it to an Apple video: “Yahoo axis video looks so similar to an Apple video. Style. Dress. Music. Cuts. iPhone. Except the icon. That's from Adobe. Ridiculous.”

While technology blogs seem optimistic, consumers are complaining they are experiencing difficulties downloading the web browser plug-in and tweeting “Unable to download Yahoo Axis for Desktop #fail” and “Note to Yahoo! Axis developers - the link to download your brand new browser w/ new tech is broken on the download page.”

Entrepreneur and hacker Nik Cubrilovic also warns that “Yahoo included their cert private key inside the Axis Chrome extension.. (means anybody can sign extension as yahoo)..” People on both Twitter and Google+ are linking to his blog post about the issue.

Nik Cubrilovic later tweeted “re: Yahoo Axis cert leak somebody from Yahoo just replied to my post saying they disabled the Chrome extension” (which may be why users are experiencing difficulty downloading the plug-in) followed by “A new Chrome Extension for Yahoo! Axis will be published within 30 minutes, according to Yahoo!”

On Google+, Axis users are saying the web browser is “Impressive, I hope yahoo managers don't mess up this time. The best tech company with the worst management,” “Interesting but I doubt I'll change from Chrome. Its a good move but many years late” and “I've tried the Chrome extension and it's fairly good on the desktop.”

Facebook launches iPhone camera app

NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook's rocky initial public offering hasn't stopped life at the world's biggest online social network. On Thursday, the company unveiled a camera app for the iPhone.

The app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and works like most other camera applications for smart phones. To take a photo, you tap a camera icon in the upper left corner of your screen, aim and shoot. You can then add filters, crop or tilt your photo, and share it on Facebook.

The new app is similar to Instagram, the photo-sharing app Facebook is in the process of buying for $1 billion. The acquisition, however, has not yet been completed, and Instagram's employees did not work on the photo app. Facebook has said it expects the Instagram acquisition to close sometime this year.

Facebook didn't give details on when it might release a version of the app for phones that run on Google's Android operating system. In a statement, Facebook said it is "carefully looking at what might make for a good Facebook photos experience across Android devices."

Samsung Galaxy S3 gets head start on rival iPhone

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co launches its latest Galaxy S smartphone in Europe on Tuesday, with the third generation model expected to be even more successful than its predecessor, which helped the South Korean company topple Apple Inc as the world's top smartphone maker.

The S3, which tracks the user's eye movements to keep the screen from dimming or turning off while in use, hits stores in 28 European and Middle East countries, including Germany and Britain, as Samsung aims to widen the gap with Apple months ahead of its rival's new iPhone, expected in the third quarter.

The Galaxy S3, running on Google's Android operating system, boasts a 4.8-inch screen, bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S and the 4.7-inch screen on HTC's One X model.

In the kind of anticipation that has become the norm for new Apple gadget releases, hopeful customers began queuing outside an electronics retail store in Berlin on Monday night eager to be the first to lay their hands on the S3.

Major global carriers - from Vodafone to Singapore's SingTel - have been aggressively promoting the S3, fuelling speculation the smartphone could top the Galaxy S2's 20 million unit sales worldwide.

"In the two years that we've been offering pre-orders, it's the most pre-ordered Android device we've had in our line-up," said a spokesman for Vodafone UK, declining to disclose exact numbers. "It's on track to meet, if not exceed, the level of pre-orders we expected by the time it actually launches."

Samsung introduced its first Galaxy in 2010, three years after the iPhone's debut, to counter Apple's roaring success in smartphones at a time when other rivals such as Nokia were struggling to make much impact.

Samsung sold 44.5 million smartphones in January-March - equal to nearly 21,000 every hour - giving it 30.6 percent market share. Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, taking 24.1 percent market share.

"The Galaxy S3 is a real challenger to the upcoming iPhone," said Francisco Jeronimo, an IDC analyst based in London. "This is likely be one of the most sold smartphones this year, though the real test will come when the next iPhone is launched."

The race for global smartphone supremacy comes as Apple has accused Samsung of copying some of its products. The South Korean company counter-claims that Apple has infringed its patents. Both have denied the allegations, and a long-running court saga continues.

Apple plans to use a larger screen on the next iPhone, according to people familiar with the situation. The iPhone 4S was introduced last October.

MORE ROUNDED

In a departure from its predecessor, whose look and feel became the main subject of the legal dispute with Apple, the latest Galaxy has a more rounded outline. It also has voice recognition, dubbed S Voice, which will inevitably be compared to Apple's Siri, and image recognition software that can tag and share photographs.

Prices vary depending on the contract. A model with 16 gigabytes of memory costs up to 189 pounds ($300) under a 12-month contract with Vodafone. A similar package for the iPhone 4s costs 159 pounds, but comes with a more expensive monthly data plan.

Samsung said it will release the S3 via 296 carriers in 145 countries by July.

Profit from Samsung's mobile division nearly tripled in January-March to $3.6 billion, accounting for 73 percent of operating profit.

Samsung - whose shares have gained 82 percent since late-August, beating Apple's 58 percent rise - is now banking on an aggressive marketing campaign ahead of the summer London Olympics to further drive sales. It has said its mobile market share in China doubled after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"The S3 is supported by an unprecedented promotional campaign," said Geoff Blaber, an analyst at CCS Insight in London. "Samsung's timing with the Galaxy S3 is perfect."

Microsoft appoints first official Iraq distributor

BAGHDAD (AP) — Microsoft Corp. said Monday it has appointed a local company to distribute its products in Iraq, calling the move a sign of progress for the country.

Microsoft's manager of Business Development for Emerging Markets, Rajai S. El-Khadem, said the software giant had chosen the Baghdad-based Legend Lands Co. as its Iraqi partner.

"This is a big step for Microsoft and for Iraq," said El-Khadem. "As of today Microsoft will be officially and locally represented in Iraq ... to provide Microsoft licenses, support and services for our clients and resellers."

El-Khadem called the Iraqi market a "promising and aggressive" one that "needs to be served at the same level as all the other countries." But he also called on the Iraqi government to approve laws that protect intellectual property rights and usage of software.

Decades of war and U.N. sanctions have created sweeping technology shortages in Iraq, and the government's limited supervision over the sector has overwhelmed the market with illegal software products.

The CEO of Legend Lands Co., Ahmed Izzedien, said his company will provide a wide range of software products that address the needs of the government, public and private sector and home users. The company will also provide support and services through a network of resellers nationwide.

"Things have changed in Iraq in a way that needs to address the major needs such as updating software used by the government ... and to move in parallel with economic development, mainly in the oil sector," he said.

Apple CEO Cook gives up $75M in stock dividends

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple CEO Tim Cook is giving up $75 million in dividends on restricted stock that the company is awarding to all of its employees.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Apple Inc. said that Cook requested that his restricted stock units not receive dividends. The dividends that Apple workers are getting amount to $2.65 per quarter for each restricted stock unit held. The shares are not normally eligible to receive dividends, so Apple's decision is a perk for its employees.

The decision comes two months after Apple introduced a regular dividend and authorized a $10 billion stock buyback program to start giving some of its cash hoard back to shareholders. It was a move that former CEO Steve Jobs long resisted. After his death last year, Apple's management has signaled that it's been considering options for the money, which amounted to nearly $100 billion.

Even without the dividend, Cook, 51, remains one of the highest-paid CEOs in America. His pay package was valued at $378 million when he became Apple's chief in August. That was almost entirely in stock awards, some of which won't be redeemable until 2021, so the value could change dramatically.

Assuming Apple pays quarterly dividends of $2.65 over the vesting period of Cook's shares, the company said he will give up about $75 million in value.

Shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple fell $5.60 to $559.72 in afternoon trading Friday. The stock has traded between $310.50 and $644 over the past year.

Huawei denies getting illegal Chinese subsidies

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies Co Ltd denied on Tuesday that it benefited from illegal Chinese government subsidies after a media report said the European Union planned to take action against Chinese telecom equipment makers in an anti-dumping case.

The Financial Times quoted unidentified EU officials and executives as saying that the commission had been gathering evidence in a case against China-based Huawei and ZTE Corp.

"Huawei has not received any communication from the European Commission regarding an investigation, but we are aware of media reports on this matter," Huawei, the world's No.2 telecom equipment vendor after Sweden's Ericsson, said in an emailed statement.

"We deny claims made in the media that Huawei employs dumping practices and has benefited from illegal state subsidies. Huawei also objects to the investigation that the European Commission is reportedly launching on the basis of these claims."

China is the European Union's second-biggest trading partner after the United States, and the bloc is China's biggest trade partner, with trade between the two forecast to hit a record 500 billion euros ($397 billion) this year.

Despite the flurry of trade between both sides, relations have been tense, with EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht complaining that China subsidizes "nearly everything", distorting competition.

Huawei employs more than 7,000 employees and has indirectly created over 6,000 job opportunities in Europe, it said. In 2011, it purchased products and services in Europe totaling over 2.9 billion euros ($3.6 billion).

Foxconn reportedly begins taking orders for the Apple TV

Apple’s Chinese manufacturing partner Foxconn has reportedly begun accepting orders to build an Apple TV set, according to Chinese news website Sina. The publication’s sources claim the long rumored iTV is currently in the “trial production stage,” however more details were not given. Earlier this month Foxconn’s CEO denied that his company would soon begin manufacturing a television for Apple. It has long been rumored that the Cupertino-based company was looking to enter the TV market with an HDTV that will reportedly look much like the company’s current LED Cinema Display. The device is said to feature an aluminum casing, iOS, Siri voice controls and an iSight camera for FaceTime video chats. Earlier reports claim that the device would debut later this year, however some reports peg it to launch in 2014.

Facebook smartphone could come by next year: report

Facebook hopes to release its own smartphone by next year, as the newly public social networking giant looks to boost its revenue in the mobile Internet market, the New York Times reported Monday.

The company has hired more than half a dozen software and hardware engineers who have worked on Apple's bestselling iPhone and one engineer who has iPad experience, the paper said, citing employees and other unnamed sources.

It has also expanded a group working on a partnership with Taiwan's HTC to create a smartphone codenamed "Buffy" -- a project first revealed last year by technology blog All Things Digital.

One former Apple engineer who worked on the iPhone and was recruited said he had met with Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg "who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones," the report said.

"Mark is worried that if he doesn't create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms," a Facebook employee told the New York Times.

When asked for comment, Facebook neither confirmed nor denied the report.

"Our mobile strategy is simple: we think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social," it said in a statement emailed to AFP.

"We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.

Facebook's initial public offering this month raised a record $16 billion but has sparked fury, and lawsuits, amid concerns that key information about the outlook for the company might not have been made widely available.

The company said earlier this month that it was launching an App Center for mini-programs that plug offerings such as Pinterest or Draw Something into the leading social network, which has more than 900 million members worldwide.

Chavez notches up three million Twitter followers

Firebrand Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez now has more than three million followers on Twitter, making him the most popular Latin American politician on the site -- a milestone he celebrated on Monday.

"To the three million followers, I sent a special thank you! We will use this platform to pursue our battle of ideas!" Chavez wrote early Monday, shortly after the number of followers topped the three million mark.

At midday, the @chavezcandanga account had 3,001,091 followers.

Early in the day, state television VTV aired an ad announcing the milestone.

Chavez, who is battling cancer, opened the account in April 2010 to counter the opposition's use of social media. He quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of followers, some of whom asked him for jobs or housing.

The flood of messages prompted the leftist leader to open a special service tasked with reading and answering all of the tweets.

Chavez, 57, has been in power in 1999. He is running for reelection as a "revolutionary socialist" in October against Henrique Capriles, the youthful Miranda state governor and center-left candidate for the united opposition.

Chavez has been especially active on Twitter since his first cancer surgery in Cuba to remove a tumor from his pelvic area in June 2011.

He underwent a second operation on the same area in February after it recurred, and since then has made several trips to Cuba -- Venezuela's closest ally -- for radiation treatment.

Chavez is the most prominent face of the left in Latin America and has rallied a group of like-minded leaders as a counterweight to the United States.

He said last week that he would officially throw his hat into the ring for the October 7 presidential election.

DVDs and Blu-rays to carry two unskippable government warnings

The FBI Anti-Piracy Warning that is found on all modern DVD and Blu-ray discs is getting an upgrade. The United States government earlier this week announced that it will require two copyright notices on DVD and Blu-ray discs, Ars Technica reported. The first notice will warn potential piracy thieves, while the second one is meant to educate viewers. All six major movie studios have agreed to include the notices, which we will begin seeing on new discs this week. The screens will “come up after the previews, once you hit the main movie/play button on the DVD.” The warnings will each last 10 seconds and users will not have the ability to skip or fast forward through them. “Law enforcement must continue to expand how it combats criminal activity; public awareness and education are a critical part of that effort,” ICE Director John Morton said in a statement.

Apple reportedly places orders for next-generation iPhone, new 10-inch iPad

The latest rumors out of the Far East indicate that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will launch in the fall, as will a new 10-inch iPad. Apple supplier Pegatron Technology has reportedly landed orders for the Cupertino-based company’s latest handset and according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers, the device is slated for a September launch, Digitimes reported. The publication also claims Pegatron has received orders for a new 10-inch iPad to be released in the fourth quarter of 2012. John Gruber of Daring Fireball has previously called the fourth quarter iPad report “completely made-up nonsense,” however. Pegatron currently manufacturers both the iPhone 4S and the new iPad, but Digitimes claims the long rumored 7-inch iPad, which will supposedly be released in August, will be manufactured by Foxconn.

Mobile usage doubles, now accounts for 10% of worldwide Internet usage

The number of people accessing the Web through mobile devices has doubled since 2010 and now accounts for 10% of worldwide Internet usage. According to numbers compiled by Pingdom, Asia’s mobile usage amounted for 17.84% of the country’s total Internet usage, a 192.5% increase over the past 18 months. Africa’s mobile usage placed the region in second with 14.85%, usage in North America sat at 7.96%, followed by Australia, Europe and South America at 7.55%, 5.13% and 2.86% respectively. Pingdom notes that while worldwide mobile usage may only account for 10% of Web access, the number is growing at an extremely fast rate, and some countries’ Internet usage, such as India, is already nearing 50% from mobile devices.

Google issued first license to test driverless cars

Nevada is the first state to grant Google a U.S. license to test driverless cars. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed on Monday that it had approved the company’s application to test autonomous vehicles on public streets. Google will be required to have at least two people in the vehicle while testing it, however, including one in the driver’s seat. Prior to being approved, the Mountain View-based company had been testing the car on freeways in neighborhoods around Carson City and Las Vegas, according to Fox News. The tests showed the car was just as safe, if not safer, than cars operated by human drivers. “It gets honked at more often because it’s being safe,” said Nevada DMV Director Bruce Breslow. The driverless vehicles will be required to wear red license plates that contain an infinity symbol, which the DMV says represents their status as “the car of the future.” If testing goes as planned and the vehicles are ever used by the general public, the license plates will be green. “They’re designed to avoid distracted driving,” Breslow said. “When you’re on the Strip and there’s a huge truck with a three scantily clad women on the side, the car only sees a box.”

Judge throws out Proview's iPad suit vs Apple

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A California judge tossed out a lawsuit in which the Chinese firm Proview Electronics Co Ltd accused Apple Inc of tricking them into selling the "iPad" name for less than it might have.
Proview, which is also suing Apple in China over alleged illegal use of the iPad name, filed a lawsuit in California superior court in February, saying the U.S. consumer electronics company deceived it by purchasing the rights to the name through a special-purpose vehicle.
Last week, judge Mark Pierce dismissed the case, agreeing with Apple's argument that the two parties had agreed to settle any disagreements in Hong Kong.
Apple says it bought ownership of the trademark in various countries from Proview, once a global monitor maker, but the Chinese company argues that the U.S. firm dealt with only one unit of Proview and it retains rights to the iPad name in China.
An Apple spokeswoman reiterated the company's previous statement that Proview is "unfairly trying to get more from Apple for a trademark we already paid for."

Google+ rolls out 'Hangouts On Air' worldwide

Google began letting members of its social network worldwide broadcast "hangouts" live to Internet titan's growing online community.
Hangouts On Air were introduced last year at Google+ with select high-profile members testing the service that lets as many as ten people at a time take part in virtual roundtable style video chats broadcast for anyone to see.
"This small community has grown the feature in lots of creative ways," said Google+ engineering director Chee Chew.
"And they've made one thing crystal clear: when groups of passionate individuals can broadcast live, together, they results are truly remarkable.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moo, the US president, musician Will.i.am, Desmond Tutu and even the Dalai Lama have taken part in "On Air" hangouts in which intimate online gatherings can be openly viewed at the social network.
"Today we're excited to launch Hangouts On Air to Google+ users worldwide," Chew said.
"So if you have something to say-as an aspiring artist, a global celebrity, or a concerned citizen-you can now go live in front of a global audience."
The "On Air" option for Google+ hangouts is being rolled out gradually because "launching millions of live stations takes some doing."
The unique Hangouts feature has been a huge draw at the online community.
Hangouts can be limited to invited friends or opened to anyone.
"We think looking somebody in the eye and communicating in the normal social way we've learned to do over millennia is important," Google+ vice president Bradley Horowitz told AFP in a recent interview.
"We wanted to bring that authenticity back into the equation."
Hangouts have surprised the Google+ team. They have been used for language and music lessons. A stutterers' support group uses them for group meetings, and let bedridden people virtually explore the world.

New malware exploits flaw in old versions of Office for Mac

Microsoft researchers recently discovered a piece of Mac OS X malware that exploits a three-year-old flaw in old versions of Office for Mac. The threat uses a multi-stage attack, just like a Windows virus would. While Microsoft did fix the problem in 2009, the software giant notes that not every machine is up-to-date. The company’s data indicates, however, that the malware is not widespread. “No operating system that exists outside a laboratory is entirely immune to malware,” Microsoft stated on its blog. “As different operating systems continue to gain in popularity they attract more attention from would-be attackers – especially since, as we see in the example analysis above, the techniques and understanding needed to do so may be much the same as those used against other platforms. And even though an operating system may include many risk-reducing mitigation technologies, any machine’s defenses against vulnerabilities are directly related to how current its security updates for applications are kept.” Microsoft concludes by warning users of Office 2004 for Mac, Office 2008 for Mac or Open XML File Format Converter for Mac to update their software in order to protect themselves from possible threats.

Android lost money in 2010

During Google’s ongoing legal dispute with Oracle, the judge presiding over the case revealed the Internet giant’s Android mobile operating system was not profitable in 2010, Reuters reported. Google does not publicly report financial information regarding its Android operating system, however the judge did not disclose specific figures, but instead said it lost money in each quarter of 2010. “That adds up to a big loss for the whole year,” he said. Oracle argued that Google should not be able to deduct certain Android expenses for the purposes of copyright damages related to the case.

New iPhone to feature 4-inch display, metal case, smaller dock connector, fall release

Apple’s new iPhone, which is currently rumored to launch in September or October, is reportedly going to be the first iPhone to have a larger display. Multiple reports have suggested that the new iPhone will feature a 4-inch screen, and iLounge’s Jeremy Horowitz is throwing his weight behind it as well. Additionally, he’s reporting that the device will be taller and 20% thinner than the current iPhone 4S. The back of the device will have a metal panel according to the report, though it won’t cover the entire back of the phone. This seems a little strange, especially with iLounge’s rendering. What about the white version? Lastly, there will indeed be a new dock connector to make room for the thinner case, so no doubt third-party accessory manufacturers are going to be thrilled about that, but Apple’s move to introduce a thinner and smaller dock connector is likely a necessary step toward making the iPhone insanely thin. One barrier that Apple has not yet tackled is the 3.5 mm headset jack, which some day might disappear completely in favor of Bluetooth and AirPlay streaming. One more mockup of the new iPhone from iLounge is after the break.

Apple faces investigation over UK iPad 4G claims

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is turning its beady eye on Apple after the company failed to remove references to the iPad 4G on its UK website.
The problem arises because the new iPad 3 does offer 4G connectivity, but not here in ye olde Britain where we languish on 3G networks.
Despite the promise of 4G being around the corner (if Everything Everywhere, Vodafone and co can ever manage to play nice), we'll be running on a whole different frequency to the networks abroad so the current iPad won't be able to connect to them.
Up the creek without an iPaddleThe ASA had received and dealt with several letters of complaint about this misleading promise of 4G, with the investigation concluding when Apple promised to remove all signs of a 4G iPad on its UK website.
However, visiting Apple's UK website at the time of writing, the data-ready device is still refered to as the iPad Wi-Fi + 4G.
The BBC sites a source at the company who said that "no undertaking was given to remove all references to 4G from its site".
So the ASA is back on the scene, with several new complaints from consumers about "potentially problematic claims" made on the website.
A spokesperson for the ASA said, "If it appears that the problem claims we asked Apple to remove are still appearing, we will investigate these new complaints."
Apple came under fire in the land down under for making the same claims – Australians can claim a refund if they feel misled by the company telling them the iPad is 4G compatible when it isn't 4G compatible in the country in which they reside. Also, they're holding it wrong.

Google vs Oracle: Verdict coming in Android 'copying' case

A crucial verdict in the courtroom battle between Google and software developer Oracle is imminent after a jury retired to consider the case.
Oracle alleges that Google unlawfully copied elements of its Java software, when it developed the Android mobile operating system, rather than pay a license fee.
Google admits it did utilise the Java API under the "fair use" policy, but then created its own software rather than "copy" the Java within Android.
If the jury decides Google is at fault, it may end up costing the search giant billions in compensation and unpaid licensing fees.
'Nothing to see here,' says Google"There was no copying here because Google knew that it couldn't use Sun's source code," said Google legal eagle Robert Van Nest in his closing arguments.
"This kind of use of APIs in this way where you use the minimum you need to be compatible is fair use."
However, Oracle says there was nothing fair about Google's use of the Java software and without legal intervention, the software licensing infrastructure will fall apart.
"If Google can just take the APIs and be forgiven under fair use, that licensing falls apart," Oracle lawyer Michael Jacobs told the San Fransisco court.
The verdict will only bring to a close the first part of this complicated patent infringement case, with several more installments set to follow.
So far, 2012 has been the year of the patent wars and that trend is showing no sign of relenting

Microsoft counts on allies in mistimed tablet market

Microsoft is counting on friends to make it a hit later this year when it crashes a tablet computer party at which Apple has been the star ever since the launch of the iPad.
The US software colossus turned a draining patent lawsuit with Barnes & Noble into a mutually beneficial alliance that could make Nook digital books a cornerstone of a content "ecosystem" vital to selling Windows 8 tablets.
Microsoft said Monday that it will make a $300 million investment in a new Barnes & Noble subsidiary focusing on the bookseller's digital reading capabilities, including its Nook tablet, and its college businesses.
"It is not a surprise they are making this kind of investment," said Gartner Research analyst Michael Gartenberg.
"Barnes & Noble is probably the best partner for them, and it insures Windows has a book and magazine service as part of its overall ecosystem."
Tablets powered by Windows 8 software are expected by the end of this year.
Amazon.com Kindles based on free Google-backed Android operating systems and Apple iPads have proven that while buyers like slick hardware, they love devouring videos, music, applications, digital books and other "content."
"Sometimes we focus too much on the technology," said Michael Cherry, an analyst at Directions On Microsoft, an independent firm that tracks the Redmond, Washington-based technology firm.
"The success of tablets isn't going to be because it is running Windows, but because it has the apps people want and a price people want to pay for that kind of device," he continued.
Cherry is certain Microsoft will make more alliances to cultivate a rich ecosystem for Windows tablets.
"This is just the beginning; there will be more deals," the analyst said. "When you are late to the party you often have to encourage partners to work on the platform."
Ironically, Microsoft launched tablet software a decade ago only to see it fail because publishers and readers weren't ready for it, according to analysts.
"Sometimes Microsoft is too early to the party," Cherry said. "Timing is everything."
Windows-based tablets boasting features such as removable keyboards for typing and styluses for touch-screen commands were released in 2002 but didn't catch on.
"Once again Microsoft led but let someone else take it away from them," Gartenberg said. "Microsoft is often early to the party, has the vision but not the wherewithal to stick with it."
Microsoft typically avoids making its own hardware, preferring to provide software to gadget makers. Microsoft device flops include Zune players launched to challenge on iPods and Kin smartphones geared for the young.
In contrast, Xbox videogame consoles Microsoft fielded to take on Sony PlayStation systems have become a big winner.
"Microsoft has a tendency to get the product right but to be stingy so you have the Windows phone failure, Zune failure, Kin failure...," said independent analyst Rob Enderle of Silicon Valley.
"They invested heavily in Xbox, and it succeeded."
The timing of Microsoft's return to the tablet party is a non-issue since rivals have been unable to overthrow iPad, according to NPD analyst Stephen Baker.
"This is about Microsoft building up an ecosystem more than anything else," Baker said. "This is more Microsoft trying to bring some allies into the battle."
The digital textbook market was deemed by analysts a shrewd place to start because it has yet to be claimed and premium prices charged by Apple for its slick iPads can be daunting to schools and students.
Meanwhile, textbooks are among the strengths of Barnes & Noble and Microsoft computers have "deep hooks" in education, Enderle said.
"Where neither one separately is well positioned, together they would be better positioned than Apple is," Enderle said. "This gets Nook, Microsoft and Barnes & Noble back in the game."
The alliance also means that Microsoft should be able to create a digital books and magazine library that spans the array of gadgets or computers powered by Windows software.
"Apple and Amazon will both see this as a potential threat and more against that threat," Enderle said.
"The clock is ticking. Even though Microsoft has advantages, it doesn't have a lot of time to deliver something to market."
