New Apple mobile software gets maps, Siri updates
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Most of Apple's mobile devices will get a new operating system this fall, including a different mapping service and a built-in bond with Facebook.
The company says its iOS 6 software will sport more than 200 new features, though some won't be available on all devices. It will be a free upgrade for iPhones released since 2009, as well as last year's and this year's iPad models. It will also work with newer iPod Touch devices.
Without providing a specific date, Apple said the updated software will be released this fall. Apple typically upgrades its mobile software around the same time it starts selling a new iPhone. Last year, it happened in October to take advantage of the holiday shopping season. A preview version of the new iOS was made available to application developers starting Monday.
Here are some highlights of iOS 6:
— Maps.
Apple's mobile devices will have a mapping program, built in-house.
In the past, Apple has given prominent billing to Google Inc.'s mapping app. But the two companies have increasingly become rivals as people buy more devices running Google's Android operating system. Google also has been keeping some features, including turn-by-turn directions spoken aloud, exclusive to Android.
Apple's new Maps application will have a voice navigation feature. It will have real-time traffic data and offer alternative routes as traffic conditions change.
It will also include "flyover" three-dimensional images taken by helicopters hired by the company to fly over major cities. Google said last week that it has been dispatching its own planes to produce similar 3D images that will soon be available on its mapping service.
Apple's map program will be integrated with its Siri virtual assistant so that you can ask for directions and pose other questions.
— Facebook.
The new software promises better integration with Facebook. The idea is you enter your password just once, and you can post to Facebook from a variety of apps. You can also post about websites directly from Apple's Safari browser.
Facebook will be integrated with Apple's online app store so that you can declare that you "like" specific apps there, as well as songs and movies in iTunes.
Events in Facebook's calendar and birthdays of Facebook friends will also appear on your phone's calendar.
— Siri.
IOS 6 will have enhancements to Siri, which interprets voice commands and talks back to the user. It is also coming to the iPad for the first time.
Since Siri was introduced in October with the iPhone 4S, Siri has been "studying up and learning a lot more," says Scott Forstall, Apple's senior vice president for iPhone software. Siri's sharpened intellect will be especially apparent when the voice assistant is fielding questions about movies, restaurants and other things, according to Forstall.
He demonstrated that by having Siri tell whether LeBron James or Kobe Bryant is the taller basketball player. Siri replies, "LeBron James appears to be slightly taller" as the cards of both players are displayed on an iPhone screen.
Apple says it is partnering with Yelp Inc. so that Siri can include ratings and prices of restaurants when you ask her about places to eat. The company is also partnering with OpenTable Inc. to make reservations.
Siri will now be available in more languages and more countries.
Apple also says it's working with car manufacturers to let you use a button on the steering wheel to talk to Siri, allowing you to keep your hands on the road. Apple says General Motors Co., BMW AG and Daimler AG's Mercedes are among the automakers that have promised to offer Siri integration in the next 12 months.
— Calls
Don't want to be disturbed?
Apple's new software will give you more options for preventing messages and text notifications from disturbing you at night, for instance.
You can control how and when you get back to people. If you can't call someone back right away, you can set a reminder to call that person back later or have a text message sent directly to the caller.
There's a "call when you leave" feature that reminds you to call back when you are leaving a building or office. The phone can detect when you are leaving.
— Passbook
Apple's new Passbook feature will be a central place to keep your boarding passes, tickets and gift cards.
When you get to a Starbucks, for instance, the device will bring up your gift card if you have one and if you have the location feature turned on. Likewise, when you get to a movie theater or baseball stadium, the ticket will pop up. Passbook will also alert you to gate changes and flight delays once you have a boarding pass stored.
Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin suspects Passbook will be the foundation for a digital commerce hub that Apple is trying to implant on its mobile devices starting with the next iPhone. "This looks like a harbinger of a digital wallet that could handle a variety of transactions," Golvin said.

LinkedIn works with FBI on password theft
(Reuters) - LinkedIn Corp is working with the FBI as the social network for job seekers and professionals investigates the theft of 6.4 million member passwords, the company said on Thursday.
The company does not know of any accounts that were taken over as a result of the security violations, according to LinkedIn spokesman Hani Durzy.
A spokeswoman with the FBI declined to comment.
LinkedIn is still in the early stages of the investigation. Durzy said it was not yet determined whether the email addresses that corresponded to the hacked passwords were also stolen.
On Wednesday, LinkedIn confirmed that millions of passwords were stolen.
The company said on Thursday it would disable passwords that had been compromised and force customers to reset them. The company sent affected members emails explaining how to change their passwords.
Several security experts said that LinkedIn's stolen passwords had not been adequately secured and that the company did not employ best practices utilized by the world's largest websites.
When asked to comment on that criticism, Durzy said that LinkedIn had already boosted the security of its database. "We place the highest value on the security of our members' data," he said.
Online dating service eHarmony warned on Wednesday that some of its user passwords had been breached after security experts discovered scrambled files with passwords for millions of online accounts.
The dating website's contents are sensitive and could subject compromised members to embarrassment or even extortion attempts, experts said.
The attack on LinkedIn did not last long as the latest in a series of security breaches that could affect sensitive consumer data.
On Thursday, Last.fm, which recommends music to users based on the songs they already listen to, also warned its website visitors to change their passwords after a leak which may have resulted from a hacking attack.
"We're sorry for the inconvenience around changing your password," the London-based company wrote.
It is unclear if the three attacks are all related. Web application security expert Jeremiah Grossman said on Twitter that all three companies used common Apache software for serving web pages to visitors, though that doesn't mean that there is a new flaw in the program.
The series of problems underscored the continuing issues with passwords, which are best complex, different for each site and changed every few months.
Major breaches often lead to scam emails and account takeovers, which can be used to convince acquaintances of the target to click on dangerous links that monitor online credit card or bank account use.
LinkedIn caters to companies seeking employees and people scouting for jobs. It has more than 161 million members worldwide and makes money by selling marketing services and premium subscriptions.
Shares of LinkedIn closed up 1.1 percent at $94.13 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.

NintendoLand,' 'Mario Bros.' coming to Wii U
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nintendo is relying on a famous plumber, zombies and a virtual theme park to build buzz for the Wii U.
The Japanese gaming giant unleashed 23 games for its upcoming console featuring a touchscreen controller during a news conference Tuesday at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming industry's annual trade show.
Among the titles announced were the cooperative platform game "New Super Mario Bros. U" and the amusement-park-themed mini-game collection "NintendoLand." Nintendo also demonstrated the fantastical strategy sequel "Pikmin 3" and first-person undead-fighting game "ZombiU" from Ubisoft Entertainment.
The titles employed what the company is dubbing "asymmetric gameplay," which gives players using the 6.2-inch touchscreen controller called the Wii U GamePad a different experience than those armed with traditional Wii controllers. The Wii U will be compatible with previous Wii controllers, including the Wii Nunchuk and Wii Balance Board.
"When we launched the Wii at the press conference in 2006, people were still wondering what this thing is all about," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, backstage after the press conference. "To make a comparison of where we are with the Wii U vs. the Wii, I think we're actually much further along. I say that because here at this press conference, we're able to show off over 20 games, and we've got fantastic third-party support."
Nintendo illustrated that "New Super Mario Bros. U" could be played on either a TV or the touchscreen controller, and that the latest installment in the brick-smashing, coin-collecting franchise would allow up to four players to play simultaneously with traditional controllers, while another could join in with the touchscreen controller to jab enemies and build platforms from afar.
"With the Wii U GamePad, we have the first dedicated personal screen in the long history of game machines," Shigeru Miyamoto, who created "Super Mario Bros." and "Legend of Zelda," said at the news conference through a translator.
Other games announced for the successor to the popular Wii console included the fitness title "Wii Fit U," a sing-and-dance-along game called "SiNG" and the word-filled puzzler "Scribblenauts Unlimited" from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Nintendo Co. jumped ahead of rivals Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp. to build hype at E3 by streaming an online video Sunday revealing that the touchscreen controller would be called the Wii U GamePad. The company also announced Sunday that it would release a traditional controller outfitted with two analog sticks called the Wii U Pro Controller, and that the Wii U's interface would be an online virtual hub called Miiverse.
Fils-Aime said Wii U users would be able to connect to the Miiverse, which is populated by cartoony Nintendo avatars called Miis, with Internet-enabled smartphones, tablets and other devices after the console's launch.
Microsoft and Sony showed off similar second-screen capabilities Monday. Microsoft unveiled an app called Xbox SmartGlass that would allow users to stream and share content across their TVs, tablets and smartphones using the Xbox 360, while Sony continued to hype what it calls "cross-play" between its PlayStation 3 console and PlayStation Vita hand-held device.
No price or release date was announced for the Wii U system, which was unveiled last year at E3. The tablet-like Wii U GamePad is equipped with an infrared transceiver, gyroscope and accelerometer. It also has a camera, stylus, two analog sticks and multiple buttons.
Fils-Aime said the Wii U console would work with two Wii U GamePads, but that feature was not demonstrated Tuesday.
Nintendo also previewed a trio of games for its 3DS handheld device starring its famous plumber siblings: "New Super Mario Bros. 2" introducing a golden Mario, "Paper Mario: Sticker Star" presenting a 2-D version of the protagonist in 3-D, and "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon" focusing on Mario's ghost-capturing brother.
Following the news conference at the Nokia Theatre, long lines of people snaked around the Nintendo booth inside the Los Angeles Convention Center as they waited to try "NintendoLand," which features mini-games inspired by 12 different Nintendo franchises, such as "Legend of Zelda," ''Animal Crossing" and "Donkey Kong."

Apple faces delay in seeking U.S. ban of Samsung tablets
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc is facing delays in renewing its request that a U.S. judge ban Samsung Electronics' Galaxy 10.1 tablets, a key battleground in the worldwide patent wars between the technology giants.
Apple sued Samsung last year, accusing the South Korean electronics maker of "slavishly" copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung denies the claims and countersued.
U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, rejected Apple's bid to ban some Samsung smartphones and the Galaxy 10.1 tablet. Last month, an appeals court told Koh to reconsider Apple's request regarding the tablet.
Apple promptly asked Koh for a ban once again. But in a brief order on Monday, Koh denied Apple's motion on procedural grounds, saying the appeals court must formally cede jurisdiction back to her before she could consider it.
Once that happens, Apple could refile its request, Koh said, without specifying when the appeals court would relinquish jurisdiction.
A Samsung representative could not immediately be reached for comment, while Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet pointed to an earlier statement saying Samsung's "blatant" copying was wrong.
"Each day that Samsung continues to sell its infringing Tab 10.1 causes additional harm to Apple through design dilution, lost sales, lost market share, and lost future sales of tag-along products," Apple said in a court filing last month.
The chief executives of both Apple and Samsung attended a court ordered mediation in Northern California last month, which failed to produce a settlement.

Taiwan Computex to showcase laptop-tablet hybrids
The brainchild of Intel Corp., the sleek laptop-tablet hybrid known as Ultrabook is 0.8 inches (20 mm) thick and features instant log on and ultra-sharp visual images.
Taipei's Computex, the world's second-largest computer show, will display more than a dozen 12- to 17-inch Ultrabook models powered by Intel's new generation of "Ivy Bridge" processors, which were unveiled in April.
Ultrabook's success is crucial for computer makers and others in the industry. World PC sales have stalled since Apple's 2010 launch of the slickly designed iPad made personal computing and the Internet even more portable for consumers.
The onslaught of the iPad and a host of imitators has cut deeply into the revenues of Taiwan's top two brands — Acer and AsusTek Computer Inc. Acer has slipped to the world's fourth largest PC vendor from No. 2 amid stalled sales, while AsusTek comes in fifth.
"All the companies are pinning their hope on Ultrabook, which in fact may be their last hope," said Stephen Su, a market analyst at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute.
"If the current market trend continues, tablet sales may exceed PC sales by 2016, and they hope Ultrabook can reverse the trend," he said.
The "Ivy Bridge" processors use the 22-nanometer process technology that allows for more powerful and electricity-efficient computing devices than the typical tablet. It will employ Microsoft Corp.'s much ballyhooed Windows 8 software once that debuts later this year. Su said the Ultrabook's success depends to a large extent on how well Windows 8 is received.
Ultrabooks were first sold in the final quarter of last year. The hybrid model is a creation of the decades-old alliance between Taiwan and technology giants Intel and Microsoft.
Using Intel chips and Windows software, Taiwanese makers produce more than 90 percent of the laptops sold in the world, for global brands including Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. Almost all the units are assembled in China.
Acer, Taiwan's largest computer vendor, predicts Ultrabook will account for up to 20 percent of its total PC shipments toward the final quarter this year. But its executives declined to make longer term forecasts, citing the market's volatility and the sputtering global economy.
"Ultrabook sales are gaining momentum, and with the new Windows software, it will give users a touch screen experience that's equal to or excels that of tablets currently in the market," said Henry Wang of Acer.
According to research firm Gartner Inc., global PC shipments are expected to gain a lackluster 4.4 percent to 368 million machines in 2012, after shrinking 1.4 percent in 2011.
In contrast, tablet sales have soared. Shipments totaled 17.6 million in 2011, with iPads taking 85 percent and Samsung's Galaxy 11 percent, according to Gartner. The research firm puts tablet sales forecast at 60 million in 2012 and 119 million in 2013.
As volumes rise, prices of Ultrabooks could fall from $1,000 to $800 in the second half to become a viable competitor to the light and ultracompact MacBook Air, analysts say. The Apple laptop now starts at $999.
Taiwan's Topology Research Institute predicts Ultrabook can account for 50 percent of laptops sold in the world by 2014.
"MacBook Air may have appeal to Apple fans and some professionals, but others may like Ultrabook better because they are more familiar with its features," said Amily Chen, a Topology analyst.
By working with Intel, the entire Taiwanese computer industry could get much needed technology support from the chip giant, she said.
"To make it more power efficient, the ultralight computer requires screen drive IC and other components that are more complicated to build," she said.
Taiwanese vendors are also trying to get a piece of the ever-expanding tablet market. Scores of new models will be unveiled during Computex's five-day run, organizers say.
AsusTek's 10-inch Android-powered Transformer has sold well and the company is expected to unveil several new models at Computex. Google reportedly has been collaborating with AsusTek in rolling out a 7-inch tablet computer to compete with Amazon's low-priced Kindle Fire.

Microsoft Windows 8 Release Preview available for download
The Release Preview build of Windows 8 features new apps, richer experiences, tens of thousands of refinements and a touch-friendly Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer 10.
“We’re thrilled to be at this milestone with the Windows 8 Release Preview,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, marking the operating system’s final stage of development before being rolled out to PC and tablet manufacturers.
Microsoft released the previous Windows 8 Consumer Preview build of the operating system (OS) back in February. The OS was downloaded more than 1 million times in the first 24 hours and has since become the company’s most tested operating system of all time.
Since then, Microsoft has made a number of improvements to refine the Windows 8 experience. The OS is destined to be found on touchscreen tablets and traditional PCs in the future. It will have to compete with the growing onslaught of Android-powered tablets hitting the web and iOS on Apple’s iPad (the next version of iOS is expected to be previewed during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week).
One of the major updates found on the latest version of Windows 8 is the addition of brand new apps from both Microsoft and its third-party partners.
“Highlights include Bing Travel, News and Sports apps, as well as Gaming and Music Xbox apps that integrate with your Zune pass,” said Microsoft. “The Windows 8 Release Preview also features notable improvements to the Mail, Photos and People apps that initially debuted with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.”
New personalization options give users the ability to customize their Start screen and work across multiple monitors. There are also new Family Safety features.
Additionally Microsoft is the first browser maker to switch on the Do Not Track feature within its Internet Explorer 10 web browser as default.
Microsoft is working towards the “goal of having PCs with Windows 8 and Windows RT available for the holidays.”
Consumers wanting to try out Microsoft’s Windows 8 Release Preview can download the OS for free from
Microsoft said consumers in 131 markets who purchase a Windows 7 PC between June 2 and January 13, 2013 will be eligible for an upgrade to the new Windows 8 Pro software at a discounted price of $14.99.
There will be discounts and offers for Windows 7 customers who upgrade too. Microsoft said it will announce these offers in the coming months.

Panasonic mulls shrinking HQ workforce: source
Following restructuring at its plants and other facilities, next in line is the company's headquarters, the source with knowledge of the deliberations said. Rather than redundancies, however, staff may be shifted to other units, subsidiaries or affiliates, the source added.
The maker of Viera TVs and Lumix cameras, which incurred a 772 billion yen ($9.7 billion) group net loss for the year ended March 31, may more than halve its 7,000 head office workers, the Nikkei business daily reported Tuesday, without saying where it obtained the information.
A Panasonic spokeswoman said no job cuts had been decided, adding that the company was, nonetheless, always looking for ways to restructure its business.
The consumer electronics maker's most recent round of staff cuts taps into an emerging trend of redundancies at yen-hobbled Japanese manufacturers, particularly technology giants such as Sony Corp that are struggling to compete against foreign rivals, such as Korea's Samsung Electronics.
Sony's new chief Kazuo Hirai last month outlined plans to cut 10,000 jobs, or 6 percent of the global workforce at the firm, as losses mount in its TV division.
Yet, borne of a stakeholder business culture where firing workers is frowned upon, Japanese firms still eschew mass lay-offs. That hesitancy leaves them worker heavy and, therefore, less productive.
Panasonic, with annual sales of about $99 billion, employs some 350,000 people worldwide. Sony has half that number on its payroll. Panasonic's payroll total is around three times that of Samsung Electronics and 60,000 more than General Electric, where annual sales are $30 billion higher.
Incoming president Kazuhiro Tsuga, due to take his post next month, has said one of his main missions would be to speed up decision-making. He has pledged to get Panasonic's ailing TV business back on a firm footing within two years.
Sources told Reuters earlier this month that Sony and Panasonic were in talks to jointly develop the technology to mass produce next-generation OLED televisions, widely seen replacing current LCD TVs.
Panasonic, which aims to achieve a 50 billion yen group net profit in the year ending March 2013, would start discussing the latest job cuts with workers in July and likely start offering early retirement soon after, the Nikkei said.
The company was also considering spinning off R&D and production technology functions, the paper said. Procurement division personnel could be transferred to closely affiliated segments.
Panasonic's shares gained as much as 3.3 percent in early trading in Tokyo and ended the morning session up 1.2 percent at 522 yen compared with a 0.3 percent fall in the broader Topix index. ($1 = 79.4850 Japanese yen)

iPad game lets kids virtually pulverize food to learn about nutrition
Created by Washington-based nutritionist Marta De Wulf, the game was released in late March as an iPad app and is a winner in US First Lady Michelle Obama's "Apps for Health Kids" Competition, part of her Let's Move! initiative. The app is available in free and paid versions and for the web, and versions for iPhone and iPod Touch are coming this summer.
The idea of the game is to let kids guess the amount of sugar, salt, and oil in their favorite foods -- such as burgers, fries, and sodas -- then smash them to learn the totals. As players advance in the game, they'll have a chance to guess what is in more complex foods, and eventually entire meals.
"It's kind of playful and it's fun, and it doesn't hit you over the head," Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D., director of the University of Washington Center for Obesity Research, told The Seattle Times this week. "It helps families make small, incremental changes so that they eat a little bit better."
The free version includes five foods; the $2.99 version includes 40 foods and meals. "So far, more than 140,000 foods have been smashed around the world," according to The Seattle Times.
Meanwhile, another app game recently launched that hopes to inspire overweight teens to get active. Dubbed Zamzee, the game comes equipped with a hip-worn sensor that tracks kids' movements and awards physical activity with points that they can upload to the Zamzee web portal.

Social media reactions to Yahoo! Axis: impressive on the iPad, risky on the desktop
On Twitter technology blogs are posting links to their reviews and Tweeps are using their 140 characters to weigh in on the new browser.
“Yahoo Axis Shines on iPad, an Afterthought on Desktop” says Mashable. CNET editor Rafe Needlemann says he is surprisingly impressed. He tweets, “Here comes Yahoo’s own Web browser, Axis. Surprising factoid: It’s good. cnet.co/JJ92f9.”
All Things D Co-Executive editor Kara Swisher links to her Axis article, tweeting, “Good Lord, I Might Now Want to Use Yahoo Search Again -- Product Dudes Talk About New Axis Browser (Video) http://t.co/Il8E4Fiz.”
Senior MacWorld contributor Glenn Fleishman jokes that “Yahoo couldn’t afford to get [the guy in the Axis Demo video] a shave, a haircut, or a T-shirt that fit him. Hard times. Hard Axis times,” while other microbloggers liken it to an Apple video: “Yahoo axis video looks so similar to an Apple video. Style. Dress. Music. Cuts. iPhone. Except the icon. That's from Adobe. Ridiculous.”
While technology blogs seem optimistic, consumers are complaining they are experiencing difficulties downloading the web browser plug-in and tweeting “Unable to download Yahoo Axis for Desktop #fail” and “Note to Yahoo! Axis developers - the link to download your brand new browser w/ new tech is broken on the download page.”
Entrepreneur and hacker Nik Cubrilovic also warns that “Yahoo included their cert private key inside the Axis Chrome extension.. (means anybody can sign extension as yahoo)..” People on both Twitter and Google+ are linking to his blog post about the issue.
Nik Cubrilovic later tweeted “re: Yahoo Axis cert leak somebody from Yahoo just replied to my post saying they disabled the Chrome extension” (which may be why users are experiencing difficulty downloading the plug-in) followed by “A new Chrome Extension for Yahoo! Axis will be published within 30 minutes, according to Yahoo!”
On Google+, Axis users are saying the web browser is “Impressive, I hope yahoo managers don't mess up this time. The best tech company with the worst management,” “Interesting but I doubt I'll change from Chrome. Its a good move but many years late” and “I've tried the Chrome extension and it's fairly good on the desktop.”

Facebook launches iPhone camera app
The app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and works like most other camera applications for smart phones. To take a photo, you tap a camera icon in the upper left corner of your screen, aim and shoot. You can then add filters, crop or tilt your photo, and share it on Facebook.
The new app is similar to Instagram, the photo-sharing app Facebook is in the process of buying for $1 billion. The acquisition, however, has not yet been completed, and Instagram's employees did not work on the photo app. Facebook has said it expects the Instagram acquisition to close sometime this year.
Facebook didn't give details on when it might release a version of the app for phones that run on Google's Android operating system. In a statement, Facebook said it is "carefully looking at what might make for a good Facebook photos experience across Android devices."

Samsung Galaxy S3 gets head start on rival iPhone
The S3, which tracks the user's eye movements to keep the screen from dimming or turning off while in use, hits stores in 28 European and Middle East countries, including Germany and Britain, as Samsung aims to widen the gap with Apple months ahead of its rival's new iPhone, expected in the third quarter.
The Galaxy S3, running on Google's Android operating system, boasts a 4.8-inch screen, bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S and the 4.7-inch screen on HTC's One X model.
In the kind of anticipation that has become the norm for new Apple gadget releases, hopeful customers began queuing outside an electronics retail store in Berlin on Monday night eager to be the first to lay their hands on the S3.
Major global carriers - from Vodafone to Singapore's SingTel - have been aggressively promoting the S3, fuelling speculation the smartphone could top the Galaxy S2's 20 million unit sales worldwide.
"In the two years that we've been offering pre-orders, it's the most pre-ordered Android device we've had in our line-up," said a spokesman for Vodafone UK, declining to disclose exact numbers. "It's on track to meet, if not exceed, the level of pre-orders we expected by the time it actually launches."
Samsung introduced its first Galaxy in 2010, three years after the iPhone's debut, to counter Apple's roaring success in smartphones at a time when other rivals such as Nokia were struggling to make much impact.
Samsung sold 44.5 million smartphones in January-March - equal to nearly 21,000 every hour - giving it 30.6 percent market share. Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, taking 24.1 percent market share.
"The Galaxy S3 is a real challenger to the upcoming iPhone," said Francisco Jeronimo, an IDC analyst based in London. "This is likely be one of the most sold smartphones this year, though the real test will come when the next iPhone is launched."
The race for global smartphone supremacy comes as Apple has accused Samsung of copying some of its products. The South Korean company counter-claims that Apple has infringed its patents. Both have denied the allegations, and a long-running court saga continues.
Apple plans to use a larger screen on the next iPhone, according to people familiar with the situation. The iPhone 4S was introduced last October.
MORE ROUNDED
In a departure from its predecessor, whose look and feel became the main subject of the legal dispute with Apple, the latest Galaxy has a more rounded outline. It also has voice recognition, dubbed S Voice, which will inevitably be compared to Apple's Siri, and image recognition software that can tag and share photographs.
Prices vary depending on the contract. A model with 16 gigabytes of memory costs up to 189 pounds ($300) under a 12-month contract with Vodafone. A similar package for the iPhone 4s costs 159 pounds, but comes with a more expensive monthly data plan.
Samsung said it will release the S3 via 296 carriers in 145 countries by July.
Profit from Samsung's mobile division nearly tripled in January-March to $3.6 billion, accounting for 73 percent of operating profit.
Samsung - whose shares have gained 82 percent since late-August, beating Apple's 58 percent rise - is now banking on an aggressive marketing campaign ahead of the summer London Olympics to further drive sales. It has said its mobile market share in China doubled after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
"The S3 is supported by an unprecedented promotional campaign," said Geoff Blaber, an analyst at CCS Insight in London. "Samsung's timing with the Galaxy S3 is perfect."

Microsoft appoints first official Iraq distributor
Microsoft's manager of Business Development for Emerging Markets, Rajai S. El-Khadem, said the software giant had chosen the Baghdad-based Legend Lands Co. as its Iraqi partner.
"This is a big step for Microsoft and for Iraq," said El-Khadem. "As of today Microsoft will be officially and locally represented in Iraq ... to provide Microsoft licenses, support and services for our clients and resellers."
El-Khadem called the Iraqi market a "promising and aggressive" one that "needs to be served at the same level as all the other countries." But he also called on the Iraqi government to approve laws that protect intellectual property rights and usage of software.
Decades of war and U.N. sanctions have created sweeping technology shortages in Iraq, and the government's limited supervision over the sector has overwhelmed the market with illegal software products.
The CEO of Legend Lands Co., Ahmed Izzedien, said his company will provide a wide range of software products that address the needs of the government, public and private sector and home users. The company will also provide support and services through a network of resellers nationwide.
"Things have changed in Iraq in a way that needs to address the major needs such as updating software used by the government ... and to move in parallel with economic development, mainly in the oil sector," he said.

Apple CEO Cook gives up $75M in stock dividends
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Apple Inc. said that Cook requested that his restricted stock units not receive dividends. The dividends that Apple workers are getting amount to $2.65 per quarter for each restricted stock unit held. The shares are not normally eligible to receive dividends, so Apple's decision is a perk for its employees.
The decision comes two months after Apple introduced a regular dividend and authorized a $10 billion stock buyback program to start giving some of its cash hoard back to shareholders. It was a move that former CEO Steve Jobs long resisted. After his death last year, Apple's management has signaled that it's been considering options for the money, which amounted to nearly $100 billion.
Even without the dividend, Cook, 51, remains one of the highest-paid CEOs in America. His pay package was valued at $378 million when he became Apple's chief in August. That was almost entirely in stock awards, some of which won't be redeemable until 2021, so the value could change dramatically.
Assuming Apple pays quarterly dividends of $2.65 over the vesting period of Cook's shares, the company said he will give up about $75 million in value.
Shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple fell $5.60 to $559.72 in afternoon trading Friday. The stock has traded between $310.50 and $644 over the past year.

Huawei denies getting illegal Chinese subsidies
The Financial Times quoted unidentified EU officials and executives as saying that the commission had been gathering evidence in a case against China-based Huawei and ZTE Corp.
"Huawei has not received any communication from the European Commission regarding an investigation, but we are aware of media reports on this matter," Huawei, the world's No.2 telecom equipment vendor after Sweden's Ericsson, said in an emailed statement.
"We deny claims made in the media that Huawei employs dumping practices and has benefited from illegal state subsidies. Huawei also objects to the investigation that the European Commission is reportedly launching on the basis of these claims."
China is the European Union's second-biggest trading partner after the United States, and the bloc is China's biggest trade partner, with trade between the two forecast to hit a record 500 billion euros ($397 billion) this year.
Despite the flurry of trade between both sides, relations have been tense, with EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht complaining that China subsidizes "nearly everything", distorting competition.
Huawei employs more than 7,000 employees and has indirectly created over 6,000 job opportunities in Europe, it said. In 2011, it purchased products and services in Europe totaling over 2.9 billion euros ($3.6 billion).

Facebook smartphone could come by next year: report
The company has hired more than half a dozen software and hardware engineers who have worked on Apple's bestselling iPhone and one engineer who has iPad experience, the paper said, citing employees and other unnamed sources.
It has also expanded a group working on a partnership with Taiwan's HTC to create a smartphone codenamed "Buffy" -- a project first revealed last year by technology blog All Things Digital.
One former Apple engineer who worked on the iPhone and was recruited said he had met with Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg "who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones," the report said.
"Mark is worried that if he doesn't create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms," a Facebook employee told the New York Times.
When asked for comment, Facebook neither confirmed nor denied the report.
"Our mobile strategy is simple: we think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social," it said in a statement emailed to AFP.
"We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.
Facebook's initial public offering this month raised a record $16 billion but has sparked fury, and lawsuits, amid concerns that key information about the outlook for the company might not have been made widely available.
The company said earlier this month that it was launching an App Center for mini-programs that plug offerings such as Pinterest or Draw Something into the leading social network, which has more than 900 million members worldwide.

Chavez notches up three million Twitter followers
Firebrand Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez now has more than three million followers on Twitter, making him the most popular Latin American politician on the site -- a milestone he celebrated on Monday.
"To the three million followers, I sent a special thank you! We will use this platform to pursue our battle of ideas!" Chavez wrote early Monday, shortly after the number of followers topped the three million mark.
At midday, the @chavezcandanga account had 3,001,091 followers.
Early in the day, state television VTV aired an ad announcing the milestone.
Chavez, who is battling cancer, opened the account in April 2010 to counter the opposition's use of social media. He quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of followers, some of whom asked him for jobs or housing.
The flood of messages prompted the leftist leader to open a special service tasked with reading and answering all of the tweets.
Chavez, 57, has been in power in 1999. He is running for reelection as a "revolutionary socialist" in October against Henrique Capriles, the youthful Miranda state governor and center-left candidate for the united opposition.
Chavez has been especially active on Twitter since his first cancer surgery in Cuba to remove a tumor from his pelvic area in June 2011.
He underwent a second operation on the same area in February after it recurred, and since then has made several trips to Cuba -- Venezuela's closest ally -- for radiation treatment.
Chavez is the most prominent face of the left in Latin America and has rallied a group of like-minded leaders as a counterweight to the United States.
He said last week that he would officially throw his hat into the ring for the October 7 presidential election.

iPhone 4S on sale at Target stores
The retailer is advertising a limited time offer to slash iPhone prices by $50.
That drops the 16GB iPhone 4S to $149.99 while the 8GB iPhone 4 is reduced to $49.99.
Both deals are available with the purchase of an iPhone and two-year contract from AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint.
The sale is only available at brick and mortar Target stores, with the Target Mobile website still listing the 16GB iPhone 4S at the standard $199. As such, supplies may be limited by store.
Shoppers will want to act fast though - the sale only runs through this Saturday, May 12.
Hold out ... if you canOf course, with rumors of the iPhone 5 possibly coming as soon as June, it would be understandable to want to wait.
Each new version has historically been accompanied by deeper price cuts than Target's deal.
But with the sale ending right before Mother's Day, savvy shoppers should take note that smartphones and tablets are one of mom's most requested gifts this year.
